Bhagawan Nityananda

We should leave off the gross sleep and sleep the subtle sleep. We should enjoy the sleep obtained from the practice of Pranayam.

Commentary: Gross sleep is deep sleep where there is only the experience of a black void. Subtle sleep is the experience of the Self, the Turiya state, when you are completely conscious and aware of God, even when the body is asleep. When your Pure Perceiving Awareness is fully active, fully conscious, in the deep sleep state, this is subtle sleep. The practice of redirecting the breath in the Sushumna Nadi (pranayam) and becoming absorbed in the space between the breaths is the “sleep” of Turiya in which Spanda, the pulsation of Divine Consciousness, is experienced, even while the body is at complete rest.
